The mission of Saint Francis School is to provide a "Quality Catholic Education in a Spirit of Joy!" Away from the city in beautiful Manoa valley, adjacent to the University of Hawai'i, Saint Francis School has open courtyards, a fish pond, swimming pools, sports facilities, and ample parking. The Christian atmosphere and philosophy of the school provide a great moral and spiritual foundation for our students. In addition, the quiet and beauty of the campus provide an outstanding environment in which to study. We believe that all children are capable of learning and can become self-reliant, contributing members of their church and society. We are proud of this legacy and we continue to be committed to excellence. We welcome your interest, your questions, and your visits.
Our Academics
Preschool children are accepted into our early learning program, Blessed Marianne Cope Preschool, at age two. At age three and when toilet training has been completed they join a multi-aged classroom. The program at both levels includes activities and experiences that will encourage each child to develop positive religious attitudes and social, emotional, physical, creative, and cognitive skills at his/her own pace.
An integrated, multi-aged curriculum is used at our elementary level (K-6). Content from various disciplines: religion, English, social studies, mathematics, science, Spanish, music, and art is integrated through themes, projects, plays, and other learning experiences, so children develop an understanding of concepts and make connections across disciplines. Integrated studies reflect Howard Garner's multiple intelligences and the belief that children learn holistically, as well as acknowledge John Dewey's insistence that opportunities be provided for concrete experiences.
The high school, (7-12) offers three major programs of study: Honors/AP, College prep, and ESL. Pre-requisite courses in several departments begin in the 7th and 8th grades thus allowing students to reach AP levels without the need to attend summer school. A senior project is required of all graduates and in continuing with the multi-aged concept students are assigned to courses based on ability rather than on age or grade level.
